When Bobby Ray Phills, II, founded The Bobby Phills Educational Awareness Foundation in 1996, he envisioned an organization that would promote and develop educational awareness among children who were less fortunate. He worked to create an organization that could stress the parallel importance of athletics and academic achievement.
As a team-leader and obvious star in the NBA, as well as an all-state basketball star in college and an avid golf and tennis player, Phills' love of athletics was apparent to many. His love of community, academic prowess, and role as a remarkable father, husband, and son were equally important aspects of his being. Bobby's gracious spirit comes through in the mission of this Foundation that he so dearly cherished. At the core of the Foundation is the goal to provide children with a means of intellectual stimuli and growth through academic advancement, athletic programs and activities, mentoring opportunities, and social and leadership development programs...
The Foundation maintains an endowment fund, awards scholarships to deserving students, hosts a memorial golf tournament annually, and offers a number of youth basketball and golf camps for disadvantaged youth throughout the year. Since Phills' tragic passing in January 2000, his family and associates have kept his dream alive through the Foundation. It is running stronger than ever, and the Foundation continues to promote educational awareness throughout the nation by advancing academic and intellectual growth and motivation among youth through physical, athletic, civil and social development.
